De acuerdo con un modelo publicado por la organización Climate Central, algunas zonas del planeta podrían estar bajo el agua en menos de 100 años. América Latina no está exenta de esto.
Ya para el año 2019, un estudio de esta organización calculó que el aumento de los mares sería de entre 0,6 y 2,1 metros en el transcurso de este siglo, una cifra mucho mayor a lo que se estimaba anteriormente.
Te mostramos algunos de los lugares de América Latina que podrían quedar permanentemente por debajo del mar para 2100.
MÉXICO: ALGUNAS ÁREAS DE LA PENÍNSULA DE YUCATÁN
En las zonas de la costa este de México se prevé que en menos de 80 años los terrenos en Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche y Tabasco estarán sumergidos en el océano. Mientras que en el oeste, la amenaza se encuentra principalmente a lo largo de las costas de Sonora, Sinaloa y Nayarit.
BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA
Con relación a Colombia el estudio destaca dos áreas: una muy cercana a Barranquilla, específicamente la desembocadura del río Magdalena en el mar Caribe y otra hacia la frontera con Panamá.
De hecho, en el último año la zona cercana a Barranquilla, el río Magdalena arrasó aproximadamente con 20 metros de terreno por consecuencia de una subida en el caudal del río.
OTROS LUGARES DEL SUR DE AMÉRICA
Brasil, con más de 7 mil kilómetros de costa sobre el océano Atlántico, figura entre los países con mayor riesgo de América Latina. Algunas de las áreas que podrían quedar bajo la línea de la marea alta de forma permanente están cerca de ciudades clave como Porto Alegre y Río de Janeiro.
No por casualidad en Río de Janeiro se ha hecho evidente el peligro que azota la famosa playa de Copacabana por el aumento del nivel del mar.
En Argentina, por ejemplo, el estudio resalta dos áreas. La provincia de Entre Ríos, donde corren ríos como el Ibicuy y el Paraná, y la otra es en la provincia de Buenos Aires, cercana a la bahía de Samborombón.
¿CÓMO FUNCIONA ESTE ESTUDIO?
La organización realiza una serie de mapas que se basan en conjuntos de datos a escala global para la elevación, las mareas y las probabilidades de inundaciones costeras. Las áreas más bajas que el nivel de agua seleccionado y con un camino sin obstáculos hacia el océano están sombreadas en rojo.
