Luego del incendio en noviembre del 2021 en el Mercado de Sonora en la Ciudad de México, se detectó que en las instalaciones existía la venta ilegal de animales y sus condiciones de hacinamiento e insalubridad en que las especies vivían.
Esto provocó que la Alcaldía diera un plazo de nueve meses para que gradualmente los locatarios hicieran un cambio dentro de su giro comercial.
Ana Villagrán, diputada panista integrante de la Comisión de Bienestar Animal del congreso de la Ciudad de México, junto con la organización AnimaNaturalis están de acuerdo en que las autoridades de la alcaldía en donde se encuentra dicho mercado han sido opacas y han dejado en el olvido e impunidad aquel suceso.
Además, la Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico confirmó que las autoridades no han emitido informes a la dependencia sobre las acciones o acuerdos que se desarrollaron dentro de las instalaciones del mercado.
Menciona que, también se anunciaron mesas de trabajo para que los locatarios dejaran de vender animales exóticos, como: peces, perros, gatos, reptiles, arácnidos, entre otras especies prohibidas.
