La pesca ilegal es una problemática que asecha a todo el mundo, la cual se le atribuye principalmente, a las flotas de China, que resultan ser una amenaza para los recursos marinos del Pacífico oriental y el Atlántida sudoccidental.
Es precisos mencionar que uno de cada cinco peces que se consumen fueron obtenidos de manera ilegal, lo que representa un 20 por ciento de los 100 millones de toneladas anuales. La Armada ecuatoriana indicó que en junio se mantenía la vigilancia sobre 180 bunques extranjeros, pesqueros, tanqueros y refrigerantes, que pescaban cerca del límite de las 200 millas náuticas (370 kilómetros) de la Zona Económica Exclusiva (ZEE) de Galápagos, también conocida como plataforma continental.
Tan sólo en 2017 se detectaron 97 bunques, para 2018 esta cifra incremento a 300, en 2019 fueron 245 y el 2020, 350. Al comienzo de cada verano boreal faenan junto a las aguas de Ecuador y Perú, luego mar afuera frente a las de Chile, cruzan el estrecho de Magallanes, y remontan el Atlántico sudoccidental frente a Argentina, Uruguay y Brasil.
En el Pacífico han operado intensamente en la captura del calamar gigante (Dosidiscus gigas). Según la plataforma de seguimiento por satélite Global Fishing Watch, en 2021 lo hicieron 615 buques, de los cuales 584 eran chinos.
El presidente del Comité para el Manejo Sustentable del Calamar Gigante del Pacífico Sur, Alfonso Miranda, expresó que este año frente a las aguas ecuatorianas y peruanas pacífico han incursionado 631 barcos de bandera china.
Miranda dice que pescadores peruanos reportan incursiones de barcos chinos en la ZEE de Perú, y hace sus cuentas: si la producción peruana de calamar llega a 500 000
toneladas, con ingresos de 860 millones de dólares anuales, unas 50 000 toneladas que tome la flota extranjera implican la pérdida de 85 millones de dólares al año.
